I started working in the computer industry (in late 1986) with a software development company in British Columbia as a certified micro-computer technician.  As a senior Systems Integration Specialist for Prologic Computer Corporation (now Fincentric Corporation), my focus was on the implementation and support of IBM compatible computers to support Prologic's client-server banking system called Ovation.  I have been a senior team member (and network architect) in many western Canadian credit union banking system conversions.  Some of them are:

As a Systems Engineer and Consultant, I have been exposed to many hardware and software combinations in a variety of business applications.  Some recent project highlights (in which I acted as a senior technical lead) include the following:

• The design of a HTTP/SNMP-based network management system utilizing mobile agent technology and aggregation servers to present performance data, as well as a Syslog to SQL database (through ODBC) central logging system.

• Western Canadian connectivity study and three-phased Extranet design proposal for a national non-profit native organization.  This included migration from their current network environment using a short, medium and long-term approach, based on their business requirements.  This proposal included the incorporation of non-secure and secure web sites, web-based email, database to web publishing and an e-commerce component, facilitating the on-line sale of products and literature.

• A Novell NetWare 3.x/4.x to Windows NT 4 and E-Mail (HP OpenMail to Microsoft Exchange) conversion project for Shell Chemicals Canada Ltd. in Fort Saskatchewan, AB.  This consisted of application and data migration from the existing servers to the new NT server, as well as the migration of email from the HP system to the MS Exchange 4.0 system.  Other systems put in place included an automated NT service monitoring system (designed by me, using open source and freeware utilities), which would monitor and automatically restart services that might fail, send an email to a Help Desk mailbox, and page an on-call technician if the service could not be restarted.  I used KixTart to create a sophisticated login script for the domain.

• A Novell NetWare infrastructure re-engineering project for a major provincial agriculture financial services provider in Alberta.  This consisted of the complete redesign of the NDS, replacement of existing servers (including server consolidation), upgrade of NetWare from v4.x to v5.0, upgrading (including mail migration) the messaging system from GroupWise v4.1a to v5.5, and the upgrade of both the network and email clients on all the desktops in the organization.   The infrastructure was "built" with full support of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and an automated system was implemented which monitors critical "life signs" of the servers and the network, providing graphical representations of the "health" of the network.

• The design and implementation of an HTML/SNMP-based network monitoring system for use by a major Credit Union in Alberta as well as the agriculture financial services provider, which allowed the instant viewing and trend analysis of performance data from routers and Windows NT systems.  Data from the Windows NT systems was extracted using the SNMP4NT Performance Monitoring MIB I make available on this web-site.  This system took advantage of the open-source MRTG product (so required considerable batch, script and HTML work), as well as Lanware's Network Management Suite (NMS) and Compaq Insight Manager, and required considerable batch and HTML development as well as some PERL script programming.  Netal SL4NT syslog product was used to keep track of application uptime (starts/stops posted to MS Access Database).
