SNMP RFC
Standard MIBs and Informative Links

Important Note

Standards (RFC)s    Mailing List    Automated Services    Agents
MIB Compilers    Applications     Resources    Publication

Today, almost all network equipment manufacturers (and many software application developers) implement SNMP agents in their devices and programs so that these elements can be managed by any generic Network Management Station (NMS) like HP OpenView.

The SNMP protocol and the MIB structures for different managed protocols are standardized by the various RFCs.  This page tries to provide some useful links and information.   In the future, I may just link to another site since I find that the links drop more often than not lately!

IMPORTANT NOTE

Note! If you should find that any of the RFC links below are not working (this seems to happen periodically), try this link: http://www.simpleweb.org/ietf/rfc/.   It has some nice "sorted by" lists).

Note! If that does not work, go to the source: http://www.ietf.org/.  This is the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and as such should be considered, I suppose, "the" source for RFC documents!

SNMP PUBLICATIONS

"The Simple Times'' (tm) is an openly-available publication devoted to the promotion of the Simple Network Management Protocol. In each issue, "The Simple Times'' presents technical articles and featured columns, along with a standards summary and a list of Internet resources. In addition, some issues contain brief summaries of recent publications and upcoming events.

"The Simple Times'' is available in three editions: HTML, ASCII, and PostScript. For more information, send a message to st-subscriptions@simple-times.org with a "Subject:" line of help.  Back issues are available at either of

In addition, "The Simple Times'' has several hard copy distribution outlets. Contact your favorite SNMP vendor and see if they carry it.
